Details
Macron’s talks with opposition leaders will begin on Tuesday with Christian Jacob, leader of the traditional Conservative Republican Party (LR), which has been in decline in recent months but could help Macron gain a majority in parliament.
Socialist Party leader Olivier Faure and Communist Party leader Fabien Russell, members of the left-wing NUPES alliance, will also meet with Macron, although left-wing Jean-Luc Melanchon, who heads NUPES, has no plans to do so.
Macron will also host Le Pen, his rival in the presidential election and leader of the far-right National Union. It will be a rare meeting.
The goal is to “make decisions for the benefit of the French” at a time when there is no “alternative majority” compared to Macron’s ruling alliance, said a spokesman for the president, who asked not to be named.
Representatives of parliamentary parties will be received at the Elysee Palace separately and in turn.
The options available to Macron range from trying to form a new coalition alliance, passing legislation based on special agreements, or even calling new elections.
One option would be an alliance with Republicans, which has 61 deputies.
But LR President Jacob insists his party intends to remain in opposition.
On Monday, Macron met with his prime minister, Elizabeth Bourne, and two key allies, former prime minister Edouard Philippe and centrist leader Francois Byrne.
Addition
The outcome of the parliamentary elections was a shocking blow to the president and his reform agenda, leaving his camp facing a political stalemate.
Although the Macron Coalition Ensemble! remains the largest parliamentary party since Sunday’s National Assembly elections, lacking dozens of seats to retain the absolute majority it has held for the past five years. Melanchon and Le Pen have achieved great success, leaving them as key players in the new parliament, the newspaper writes.
The left-wing Liberation newspaper called the results a “slap” to Macron, and the conservative Le Figaro said he was now “faced with an unruly France”.
Macron Alliance Ensemble! (“Together”) won 244 seats, much less than the 289 seats required by an absolute majority, due to low turnout, which resulted in a turnout of 53.77 percent.
According to the Ministry of the Interior, NUPES, along with its allies, became the main opposition force in the election, winning 137 seats. But it is unlikely that a coalition of socialists, communists, greens and the radical left-wing La France Insoumise will be able to keep the common cause in the legislature, the newspaper writes.
The result tarnished Macron’s victory in the presidential election in April, when he defeated Le Pen and became the first French president to win a second term in more than two decades.
