“No matter what Putin says about his victory in Ukraine, without Odessa it’s all nonsense, and he knows it. He has a tremendous interest in OPP (Odessa Port Plant, ed.) And pipes going to Odessa with chemicals (Togliatti-Odesa ammonia pipeline, through which Russian ammonia is transported, ed.). All this is very important for Russia’s survival, not just to harm Ukraine. Everything connected with Odessa will be the main problem of the second half of the war, and God forbid we save Odessa and keep everything to ourselves.
Russia does not need any regional Kherson. These are words for the periphery of Russia. They need Odesa. Without Odessa, they have a defeated Donbas, which is of no value to them, ”the political scientist explained.
Let’s add
According to political scientist Ruslan Bortnik, Russia is focused on capturing and occupying the most industrialized and agriculturally developed regions of eastern and southern Ukraine: Mykolaiv, Odessa, Kryvyi Rih, Kharkiv, Zaporizhia and Dnipro.
The Ukrainian branch of the Togliatti-Odesa ammonia pipeline runs through these regions of Ukraine – Kharkiv, Zaporizhia, Dnipropetrovsk, Mykolaiv, Odesa and the almost completely occupied Luhansk and Kherson regions.
This ammonia pipeline is the only opportunity to export ammonia for the Russian company TogliattiAzot , which it produces. Russia receives up to $ 12 billion a year from the supply of ammonia through Ukraine to the West.
A few days before the war in Ukraine, Mazepin talked to Russian President Putin and promised to “surrender” Odessa in exchange for control of the OPP.
It will be recalled that back in 2015, the Mirror of the Week newspaper stated that Dmytro Mazepin was negotiating the purchase of the Odessa Port Plant.
At that time, the media reported that Mazepin had allegedly already discussed such a possibility with the head of the then Odessa regional state administration, Mikheil Saakashvili. Uralkhim denied such interest and negotiations with Saakashvili, but such an objection was quite natural, given the political situation, the journalists of the Mirror of the Week said at the time.
At the same time, the director of the communications department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Artem Shevchenko distributed a video in which Saakashvili’s meeting with Mazepin was allegedly filmed.
And during the meeting of the Reform Council there was a conflict between Saakashvili and Interior Minister Arsen Avakov, which was joined by Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk.
During the conflict, government leaders allegedly called the governor a “touring artist” and demanded that he “leave the country.”
Avakov said the conflict began after he asked Saakashvili to meet with Mazepin.
