Heavy rains are causing great floods and landslides in southern China, destroying buildings, crops and roads, forcing many people to flee their homes.
Details
In the Guangxi Autonomous Region, 145,000 people have been relocated to safety, and more than 10,000 homes have been destroyed.
According to local authorities, another half a million people were affected in the neighboring province of Jiangxi, where 433,000 hectares of crops were flooded.
About 274,000 people have sought help in Guangzhou province, according to the provincial emergency department.
Heavy rain knocked down roads in some parts of cities and demolished houses, cars and crops. In the coming days, weather forecasters predict rain. Chinese authorities on Sunday issued the first red warning of the year, the strictest warning of possible mountain flows.
During the summer months, China regularly experiences floods, most often in the central and southern regions, which usually receive the most rainfall.
China’s worst floods in recent years were in 1998, killing more than 2,000 people and destroying nearly 3 million homes, mostly along the Yangtze River, China’s most powerful river.
