The fire was caused by the destruction of the chassis on a Red Air flight flying from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Miami-Dade Department of Aviation spokesman Greg Chin said in an email to the Associated Press.
He added that 126 people were on board the plane, and three were taken to the nearest hospital with minor injuries.
Other passengers were taken by bus from the plane to the terminal.
Television news footage showed that the plane appeared to have stopped in the grass near the runway, and it and the large area around it were apparently doused with special fire-fighting chemicals. At least three fire engines were stationed nearby.
The Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue Service posted a photo on Twitter showing that fire crews quickly took control of the fire and prevented the fuel spill.
