Aslin told his family that his detainees had said that British officials had not tried to negotiate his release, they had also told him that “time is running out”.
“Aiden was very upset when he called his mother this morning. The point is that Aiden said that the DNR told him that no one from the UK was in touch and that he would be executed,” the BBC said. Aslina’s grandmother Pamela Hall.
Aslin’s family believes that contact should be established between Britain and Russia for his release.
However, sources in the British government told the BBC that the government does not want to negotiate with Russia directly, as this could ignite a false Russian narrative that the captured soldiers are mercenaries.
All foreign citizens and stateless persons who take part in hostilities on the territory of Ukraine as part of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are admitted voluntarily to military service under a contract in accordance with the 1992 Law of Ukraine “On Military Duty and Military Service”.
The persons concerned are servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, to whom, in accordance with the provisions of the Geneva Conventions for the Protection of Victims of War of 1949 and the Additional Protocols thereto, 1977, they have the legal status of combatants. This status, among other things, gives such persons the right to be treated as prisoners of war in the event of falling into the hands of the enemy.
