Context
Patriarch Kirill has supported Putin steadfastly since he took office in the country in 2009.
In 2012, Cyril called Putin’s rule a “miracle of God” that put an end to the economic turmoil of the 1990s, which followed the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The patriarch has long been surrounded by rumors of ties to the Soviet-era KGB, where Putin also worked, and allegations of a wasteful lifestyle.
In the European Union, it was proposed to include Cyril in the sixth package of sanctions.
