Smallpox is not yet an emergency in the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Saturday, but WHO Director-General Tedros Adhan Gebreyesus has expressed concern.
Details
The designation “global emergency” currently refers only to the coronavirus pandemic and ongoing efforts to eradicate polio, and the UN agency refused to use it before the outbreak of monkeypox after consultation with international experts.
According to the WHO, more than 3,200 confirmed cases of monkeypox and one death from 48 countries, where it is not common, have been reported in the past six weeks.
Nearly 1,500 cases and 70 deaths have also been reported this year in Central Africa, where the disease is more prevalent, mainly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
