India has banned some single-use plastic products as part of a federal plan to phase out plastic in the country of nearly 1.4 billion people.
Details
In the first phase, 19 plastic items were identified that are not very useful, but have a high potential to become garbage and prohibit their production, import, storage, distribution or sale. These items range from plastic cups and straws to popsicle sticks.
Some single-use plastic bags will also be phased out and replaced with more environmentally friendly ones.
The ban does not apply to bottles of water or soda or bags of chips. But the federal government has set goals for manufacturers’ responsibility for recycling or disposing of them after use.
Plastic manufacturers asked the government to delay the ban, citing inflation and possible job losses, but the government refused, citing environmental concerns.
