Rescuers found 26 dead in a landslide at a railway station in northeastern India.
Details
Due to heavy landslides and many missing people, rescue operations are expected to last several days.
Rescue spokesman Pankaj Kavidayal said 21 of the 26 confirmed dead were members of the Territorial Army. Army personnel have been providing security to railway workers amid a decades-long insurgency that has sought to create a separate homeland for ethnic and tribal groups in the region.
More than 250 soldiers, rescuers and police with the help of bulldozers and other equipment were involved in the operation in Nona, a town near Imphal, the capital of Manipur state. They were alerted to further landslides reported in the region on Saturday.
Excavators were also used to search for bodies in the river.
Thirteen soldiers and five civilians were rescued from the rubble of the completely demolished railway station, staff quarters and other infrastructure under construction, Kavidayal said. Incessant rains for the past three weeks have wreaked havoc in northeastern India and neighboring Bangladesh.
Approximately 200 people died as a result of heavy rains and mudslides, and hundreds of thousands were left without homes.
