The engineering vessel Fujing001 with thirty sailors on board found itself in the center of Typhoon Chaba in the South China Sea and broke into two parts.
As reported by the Hong Kong newspaper South China Morning Post, three crew members from the vessel were rescued and brought to safety by helicopter after the disaster that occurred on the morning of Saturday, July 2, approximately 300 kilometers west of Hong Kong. The fate of the remaining 27 sailors is still unknown.
Rescued sailors reported that some crew members may have been swept away by the waves before the first helicopter arrived. In general, the local authorities sent two planes and four helicopters to the scene of the accident, as well as a rescue ship. However, extremely unfavorable weather conditions greatly complicated the work of rescuers: at the accident site, the wind speed was recorded at 144 kilometers per hour.
