US Army General Christopher Cavoli headed NATO’s operational command. The solemn ceremony took place on July 4 at the Supreme Headquarters of the Allied Powers in Europe in Mons, Belgium .

General Cavoli succeeds General Todd Walters of the United States Air Force, who has held the position since 2019.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg congratulated Cavoli on his appointment and noted that his 35-year military career spanned the globe: from Bosnia to Iraq and from Afghanistan to Washington.
“You join us at a turning point for transatlantic security, characterized by increased strategic competition and the return of brutal conflict to Europe. I know you will continue to serve NATO with the same leadership and commitment you have always shown,” Stoltenberg said.

NATO Operational Command is responsible for planning and executing all Alliance operations. General Cavoli became the 20th Supreme Commander of the NATO Armed Forces in Europe. General Dwight D. Eisenhower, later the 34th president of the United States, took this position first.
Cavoli knows Russian, he previously worked as director of Russian affairs at the Pentagon’s Joint Staff. Now the general is in favor of expanding the Alliance and increasing defense spending.
