Mohammad Barkindo was born on April 20, 1959, in Adamawa State. He worked in various positions in the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, headed the NNPC office in London, was the managing director and executive director of oil and gas trading.
In 1993-2008, he worked as the deputy managing director of Nigeria LNG – a joint venture of NNPC, Royal Dutch Shell, Total and Eni. From 2009 to 2010, Barkindo was the Managing Director of the NNPC.
Since 1986 – in OPEC, first as a member of the delegation of Nigeria, and in 1993-2008 he was the representative of Nigeria in OPEC. For 15 years, Barkindo was a member of the OPEC Economic Commission for Nigeria.
In 2006, he served as the Secretary General of OPEC. On June 2, 2016, at the OPEC conference, Mohammed Barkindo was appointed Secretary General of the organization, starting August 1, 2016, for a three-year term.
