“The mudflow fell on the lower part of the Amarnath cave,” said a representative of the local disaster relief service.
He also added that the powerful flow swept away three public kitchens near the sanctuary.

The head of the National Disaster Response Force, Atul Karwal, reported 16 dead.
“16 people are confirmed dead. About 40 are missing,” Karwal said.
He noted that rescue operations are being carried out by four NDRF detachments – a total of more than 100 rescuers. All the injured were airlifted to the hospital.
It is emphasized that almost 15,000 pilgrims were transferred to safe areas near the cave temple.
