Hungary is not ready to discuss possible EU sanctions against the supply of Russian gas and will not support the inclusion of Russia’s Gazprom or Gazprombank in the sanctions list, stated the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, Peter Szijjarto .

“In Hungary, we have made it clear that we are not even ready to discuss any sanctions regarding gas supplies. And we have made it clear that we will never vote for a sanctions list that includes Gazprom or Gazprombank,” Szijarto said.

The minister said that the Hungarian government is now busy filling gas storages and has decided to purchase “additional volumes of gas beyond the volumes specified in our long-term contracts”. Negotiations on additional volumes of gas also began the day before yesterday with Russia.
“We have two long-term contracts, one with Gazprom, the other with Shell. And now we will buy an additional 700 million cubic meters of gas, because this is the necessary maximum that we can store in our storage until the start of the heating season. (.. .) Our goal is an additional 700 million cubic meters. We have already started trade negotiations – in both geographical directions,” Sijarto said.

Szijjarto said that the Hungarian government does not even want to negotiate a possible embargo on the supply of Russian gas, because “the security of Hungary’s energy supply cannot be a subject of compromise.”
