The Ukrainian language is going through a thorny path. In 2015, vacancies in Ukrainian accounted for 16% of the total number of vacancies posted on Work.ua, Russian for 80%.
The turning point came in 2018, when the Ukrainian rate gained momentum, and in the first half of 2022 it reached 58%, while the Russian rate decreased to 38%. Analysis of data as of June 30, 2022 shows more significant changes: Ukrainian — 68%, Russian — 26%. It is noteworthy that the English language has increased in 8 years by one and a half times – from 3.5% to 5%.
The Ukrainian language on the labor market is a trend that is actively gaining momentum
Work.ua notes that if we look at the language issue in Ukrainian cities, we will see that Lviv was and remains the most Ukrainianized city: in 2015, 70% of vacancies were in the native language, in 2022, 86%, and in June, 92%. At the same time, Kharkiv showed the greatest dynamics of Ukrainization by 15 times: in 2015 – 3%, in June 2022 – 45%.
As of now, the most vacancies are in the Ukrainian language — 76% are placed in the “Administration, middle management” category, in Russian — 30% in the “Sales, procurement” category, in foreign languages — 25% in English and 2% in other languages in the “IT, computers, the Internet”.
The distribution of the share of languages among job seekers who post resumes in the following languages is somewhat different from employers:
28.9% in Ukrainian;
66.9% in Russian;
3.9% in English;
0.3% in other languages.
Work.ua recently conducted a survey among job seekers regarding their attitude to the language of job vacancies. The following results were obtained:
1) Does the language in which it is written affect your decision to respond to a job?
61% — my decision is not influenced by the language of the vacancy.
36% — yes, I will respond more quickly to a vacancy written in Ukrainian.
3% — yes, I will respond more quickly to a vacancy written in Russian.
5,193 people took part in the survey.
2) Would you like vacancies on Work.ua to be submitted in Ukrainian?
64% — yes.
25% – I don’t care.
11% – no.
4,800 people took part in the survey.

The entry into force of the second and sixth parts of Article 27 of the Law of Ukraine “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as a State Language” will significantly affect the decision of job seekers to respond to vacancies in the Ukrainian language. From July 16, 2022, separate regulations concerning the use of language on the Internet will come into force. In addition, the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language will be able to impose fines on individuals for violating the Law.
Employers should comply with the Law on Language and understand the demand of job seekers to post vacancies in the Ukrainian language, which is only growing. Companies that switch to the Ukrainian language strengthen their employer brand and win from the point of view of competition, noted Work.ua.
