The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Peter Szijjarto, said in an interview with Index that they have scenarios of a “military emergency”, and that it is in the country’s interests to stay out of the war, and Budapest continues to pursue a policy to minimize the chance of getting involved in it .
Details
According to Szijjarto, it is in Hungary’s interest “to establish peace in the east as soon as possible, because then we can avoid the dangerous scenarios that have been prepared about what we can do to save and protect the 150,000 Hungarians living in Transcarpathia.” If the front, perhaps, approaches the western part of Ukraine, “in our case, this is a much greater security threat than before,” he pointed out.
Like any country with a war going on in its neighborhood, it should be ready to defend itself if necessary, he noted.
“In our country, scenarios of military emergency situations have also been prepared, the withdrawal of the Hungarian military from border protection is partly about this,” said Szijarto.
At the same time, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary noted that it is unlikely that the war in Ukraine will end in the near future.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary believes that Budapest continues to pursue a policy so that the chance of involvement in the war is minimal. He said that “we have already taken enough sanctions decisions, but now the West should focus more on how to achieve a ceasefire as soon as possible and eventually make peace.”
Szijjarto reaffirmed that Budapest stands by what he said earlier, “and if a place for peace talks is necessary, we are open to it, as we proposed right after the war started.”
We have no disagreements with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary also said, adding that “it’s simply because we have different interests.”
“He is Ukrainian, and we represent the interests of Hungary. And what is the Ukrainian interest? To involve as many countries as possible in this conflict, at least through the supply of weapons. On the other hand, it is in our interests to stay out of this conflict and minimize the possibility of slipping into a war situation : there is no doubt that Hungarian-Ukrainian relations were characterized by tense relations even before the start of the war, however, since the war began, we have excluded cases that cause tension,” said Sijarto.
Before
Szijjarto stated that Hungary refused to supply weapons to Ukraine in order not to expose Hungarians living in Transcarpathia to the threat of Russian shelling.
