The highest temperature ever recorded in the UK was 38.7 °C and was recorded at Cambridge University Botanic Gardens on 25 July 2019.
The Met Office said it is forecasting temperatures of 40C in the UK for the first time.
“Exceptional, possibly record-breaking temperatures are likely early next week,” Met Office chief meteorologist Paul Gundersen said, predicting a 50 per cent chance of temperatures exceeding 40C and an 80 per cent chance of a new maximum.
“Nights are also likely to be exceptionally warm, especially in urban areas,” he said in a statement. “This could lead to large-scale impacts on people and infrastructure.”
Alongside this, the UK Health Safety Agency (UKHSA) has raised its heat warning to level 4 for England for Monday and Tuesday.
The Met Office said “significant” changes to working methods and routines would be required, and there was a high risk of heat-sensitive systems and equipment failing, which could lead to local power, water or mobile service outages.
