The five Conservative candidates left to become Britain’s next prime minister face off in their first televised debate as they battle to get into a run-off that will leave just two candidates.
Details
The TV debate lasted 90 minutes. This is the first opportunity in such a competition to present their credentials to a national television audience.
The five Conservative MPs running for prime minister initially faced hostile questions from invited voters and politicians as anchors of trust and honesty.
This allowed candidates Tom Tugendhat, a well-known backbencher, and former equalities minister Kemi Badenoch to present themselves as politicians untainted and ready to embark on a new path.
But the topic of “taxation” was the most controversial during the debate. Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, backed by prominent Johnson supporters, wants to reverse the government’s recent health tax hike.
Voting by Conservative MPs will close on Wednesday, after which rank-and-file members of the party will choose two finalists following a nationwide campaign and vote.
Let’s add
The winner will be announced on September 5.
