Iran’s foreign ministry has blacklisted others who have expressed support for the dissident group, including former Republican President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani and former White House national security adviser John Bolton, Iranian state media reported.
The sanctions, which have been imposed on dozens of Americans in the past on various grounds, allow Iranian authorities to seize any assets they hold in Iran. The moves, announced at the end of US President Joe Biden’s visit to the Middle East, appear largely symbolic given the likely absence of such assets.
Giuliani, Pompeo and Bolton, all Republicans, have been widely reported to have attended MEK events and expressed support for the group. Both Pompeo and Bolton served under Trump.
Context
Iran’s indirect talks with the United States to restore the 2015 nuclear deal began in Vienna in November and continued in Qatar in June. But the negotiations reached an impasse that lasted several months.
In 2018, Trump abandoned the deal, calling it too soft on Iran, and reinstated tough US sanctions, prompting Tehran to violate the deal’s nuclear restrictions.
Iran imposed sanctions against 51 Americans in January and another 24 in April.
