Thousands of LGBT supporters marched under heavy police protection in the South Korean capital on Saturday as they celebrated the city’s first major Pride in three years after being suspended due to COVID-19.

Police set up a perimeter to separate LGBT people from conservative Christian protesters, who also numbered in the thousands and marched through nearby streets. They held banners and shouted anti-homosexuality slogans, while their leader shouted prayers into a microphone, asking God to “save the Republic of Korea from anti-discrimination laws.”
Some of the protesters condemned Seoul’s conservative mayor, Oh Se-hoon, for the city’s unwillingness to block the “lewd” pride parade. Gay rights activists are also unhappy with Oh, who told a Christian newspaper last week that the city could ban Pride from next year’s City Hall Square if this year’s participants “display obscene material or excessively expose their bodies.”
Although views of sexual minorities in South Korea have gradually improved in recent years, they are still heavily stigmatized and often subject to hate speech and crimes.
