During the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, Germany underwent a revolutionary transformation: from a country that has not supplied weapons to anyone since World War II, to a country that provides weapons to Ukraine, albeit at a slow pace.

The reason for the slowness is the dependence on Russian energy carriers and the economic problems associated with this.

“It seems to us that everything is happening slowly, because we need a large amount of military aid right now, because Ukrainians are dying every day. And the presence of one or another weapon depends on what the results will be at the front. But from the point of view of Germany itself, radical and revolutionary transformations are taking place there. It should be remembered that Germany did not supply weapons to anyone at all, this was its position after the Second World War. The country avoided any military participation, because it had a war complex. Therefore, for Germany, which began to supply weapons to Ukraine, which renounces Nord Stream-2, which aims to completely get rid of its energy dependence on Russia, these are revolutionary transformations,” Yakhno said.
However, there is another side – the agreements that are reached regarding the supply of weapons are periodically either delayed, or Ukraine receives less than it was promised.
“I attribute this to the fact that Germany, like other EU countries, is in a difficult economic situation, which can cause certain discussions within society. There are already data according to which, if Russia completely stops supplying gas, and there is such a prospect, Germany will completely lose 4.8% of production. There are also other data on inflation. Therefore, I associate this slowness, even if decisions have already been made, with economic problems,” the political scientist believes.

In addition, according to the expert, Germany is currently being rebuilt in a number of areas. In particular, in defense policy and energy policy. It is quite possible that the German authorities first seek to carry out restructuring, get rid of energy dependence on Russia and strengthen the country’s defense capabilities, and only then fully help Ukraine.
“There is another component – the West is afraid. The fact that no one supports Russia is a fact, and there will be no reverse process. But now there are two positions in Western countries. One is that it is necessary to provide Ukraine with weapons as much as possible, so that the Armed Forces of Ukraine can go on the counteroffensive as soon as possible and the war ends. This position is taken by countries that understand the threat, in particular, the Baltic countries, Eastern Europe, the United Kingdom, and the United States. And there are countries that believe that it is necessary to prevent Ukraine from being taken over by Russia. And at the same time, to prevent the one-time destruction of Russia itself, because there are risks of using nuclear weapons. This position consists in the fact that it is necessary to provide enough weapons so that Ukraine does not lose, but cannot actively launch a counteroffensive right now. And perhaps Germany is a supporter of the second option. They may fear unpredictability,
