Details
As noted, 450 people were ordered to leave two hotels and more than 90 private houses. Some were taken out on buses, others were taken directly from the beaches on boats.
It is emphasized that some houses abandoned by people burned to the ground, others, although standing, are unfit for habitation.
Wind and dry vegetation made the situation with forest fires on the island critical. The fire advanced on two fronts to the coast. There were also fires inside the island. When the flames reached the streets of Vatera, a village that has turned into a tourist resort, local authorities ordered an evacuation.
More than 80 firefighters battled the fire, assisted by volunteers, supported by 19 trucks, 9 planes and a helicopter.
Rescuers from the mainland provided additional assistance.
