Kiev. Ukraine. Ukraine Gate – December 27, 2020 – Economy
Over the nine months of 2020, the volume of consumption of galvanized steel decreased by 11% – to 227 thousand tons. At the same time, imports fell by 16.8% – to 79 thousand tons. Consumption of Ukrainian products, excluding exports, decreased by 6.9% – to 149 thousand tons.
For obvious reasons, the first two quarters of 2020 were not the best for the market. However, in the third quarter of 2020, compared to the same period of 2019, the consumption of galvanized steel decreased by 10% – to 96 thousand tons. At the same time, exports increased by 50% – to 52 thousand tons, domestic production – by 7% – to 113 thousand tons, and the volume of imports decreased by 3% – to 35 thousand tons.
From the point of view of geography of origin, significant changes have occurred in the structure of consumption of galvanized steel:
the proportion of galvanized steel produced in Ukraine for nine months on average increased from 62% to 66%;
the share of deliveries from Russia and China dropped to zero, as earlier the MKMT applied anti-dumping measures against the import of rolled metal from these countries to Ukraine;
the replacement of Russian and Chinese imports with higher quality European and Turkish ones continues, with the beginning of a tendency for the share of Turkish products to grow – on average over the period 20% against 14%.
DX51 steel traditionally dominates in the consumption structure in terms of steel grades – in the third quarter of 2020 its share increased from 74% to 82%. In just nine months of 2020, its share increased by 16 p.p. up to 79%. The specific gravity of S320-350 steel decreased from 8% to 4%, and S220-280 steel increased from 0.5% to 1.5%.
Consumption of galvanized steel in 2019 increased by 2.8% compared to the previous year – up to 326 thousand tons. USSS for 2020 predicted an increase in consumption of galvanized steel by 12% compared to the same period a year earlier – up to 365 thousand tons.
