The purpose of the document is to reduce the risks that may arise as a result of the complete cessation of gas supplies from the Russian Federation.
According to diplomats, the plan proposed by the European Commission envisages a 15% reduction in gas consumption among all member states in the period from August 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023. In addition, they are discussing the possibility of triggering an alarm signal of the European Union in case of serious interruptions in supply.
Compared to the first draft of the European Commission, the number of possible exceptions to the plan has increased, as well as the barriers to the introduction of mandatory savings goals, the media note. The proposal of the European Commission must be considered and approved by the Council of the EU.
