The Day of the Baptism of Kyivan Rus-Ukraine is a national commemorative date in Ukraine in honor of the Baptism of Rus, which is celebrated annually on July 28, the day of memory of the holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Volodymyr. The public holiday is established in Ukraine as part of the celebration of the 1020th anniversary of the Baptism of Kyivan Rus in accordance with the Decree of the President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko of July 25, 2008 No. 668/2008 “On the Day of the Baptism of Kyivan Rus-Ukraine.
The exact day and even the year of the actual event is not known. Most historians believe that Rus was baptized in 988, but there are other versions. According to the “Tales of the Temporal Years”, before the baptism of Prince Volodymyr Svyatoslavovych, there was a “test of faith”. He received messengers from Islam, Judaism and Christianity. It was the last religion that he liked the most.
The mass baptism of the city’s residents took place at the confluence of the Pochayna River with the Dnipro. After Kyiv, Orthodoxy was adopted by other cities of Russia. Not all residents immediately abandoned their traditions. Pagan customs were rooted out for several more centuries, and many of them have survived to our days.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyi proposed celebrating the new holiday , the Day of Ukrainian Statehood . According to him, the “point of reference” of Ukrainian statehood is the founding of Kyiv, the capital of Kyivan Rus and modern Ukraine. Therefore, the new holiday will be celebrated on July 28, the day of the Baptism of Kyivan Rus.
Zelenskyi announced the introduction of the new holiday during the celebration of the Independence Day of Ukraine and immediately wrote a corresponding decree. Also, the President submitted to the Verkhovna Rada a draft law on recognizing the Day of Ukrainian Statehood as a day off.
