 US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken is set to speak with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov for the first time since the war in Ukraine began more than five months ago.

The top U.S. diplomat said Wednesday he expects a call with his Russian counterpart this week to discuss a “substantial proposal” to try to free two wrongfully detained Americans, Paul Whelan and Brittney Griner.

He also plans to discuss the recently signed agreement on the transit of Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea.

Speaking at a press conference at the State Department, Blinken said he would not discuss Ukraine during the phone conversation with Lavrov, repeating that they “will not discuss Ukraine without Ukraine.”
