The government has registered a project of the Law on Amendments to the Laws of Ukraine “On Citizenship of Ukraine” and “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the State Language” regarding the conditions for admission to Ukrainian citizenship. “Today, Ukraine officially celebrates the Day of Ukrainian Statehood for the first time. It is symbolic that we count down our statehood from the year of the foundation of Kyiv, the center of ancient Ukrainian historical lands. And it is symbolic that today our Government submitted to the Verkhovna Rada a draft law on the conditions for acquiring Ukrainian citizenship,” Shmyhal is quoted as saying by the Government’s press service.

Shmyhal noted that after the adoption of this law, in order to obtain Ukrainian citizenship, it will be necessary to pass a comprehensive exam on knowledge of the basics of the Constitution of Ukraine, the history of Ukraine, and the Ukrainian language.
Those who will receive citizenship for outstanding services to Ukraine, or those who are serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine and have received citizenship, must pass three relevant exams within two years of receiving it.
Shmyhal instructed the government to prepare a draft law on the introduction of an exam for obtaining Ukrainian citizenship.
