The first flights of ships with Ukrainian grain may depart soon. At the same time, a number of questions regarding such export still remain open. According to Borys Babin, an expert of the Crimean integration association, the Istanbul agreement, which is aimed at ensuring the safe passage of ships entering and leaving the three Ukrainian Black Sea ports, does not guarantee the full export of grain,

“This is an open question. In fact, the memorandum does not say anything about it. We were not shown the document signed by the Russian side with the Turks, and under these conditions it is not known what the situation will be with this pipeline (we are talking about the Tolyatti-Odesa pipeline, through which ammonia was transported from the Russian Federation to Ukraine, – ed.), in addition, it practically passes through the front line. Therefore, this is a very, very specific question and no one will give us an answer to it, I think,” Babich explained.
Let’s add
Until February 24, 2022, Russian ammonia produced at the TolyatiAzot enterprise was transported through the Tolyatti-Odesa ammonia pipeline for further sale. However, immediately after the start of the war, transportation was put on hold .
Later, it turned out that TolyattiAzot was bought out by the Russian oligarch Dmytro Mazepin, who , promised Putin to “hand over” Odessa (on the territory of which the Odesa port plant is located, through which Russian ammonia is exported), in exchange for control over it the company .
This ammonia pipeline is one of the most profitable opportunities for the export of ammonia for the Russian company TolyattiAzot, which produces it. On average, Russia distills 2.5 million tons of ammonia through it every year.
From this transit, Ukraine receives an average of 1.6 billion hryvnias every year. But this is only a small percentage of what Russia receives from the transit of ammonia through the territory of Ukraine.
It is the Ukrainian transit branch that is the fifth largest in the world in terms of capacity, and Russia delivered ammonia through the Ukrainian ammonia pipeline to the Odesa port plant, from where it was sent by sea to the plants of the American oil company “Occidental Petroleum”.
