Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on Beijing to use its economic and political power to pressure Moscow to comply with international norms.

Zelenskyi said that Ukraine is looking for an opportunity to talk “directly” with China about its ongoing war with Russia, noting that our country had always sought close relations with Beijing in the years leading up to the war.
In an exclusive interview with the Post, the Ukrainian leader urged the Asian superpower to use its enormous political and economic influence over Russia to end hostilities.

“This is a very powerful state. It is a powerful economy… That is why it can influence Russia politically and economically. And China is also a permanent member of the UN Security Council. I am sure that without the Chinese market for the Russian Federation, Russia would feel complete economic isolation,” Zelenskyy said.
Zelensky made it clear that, in his opinion, China has the economic leverage to pressure Putin to end the war.
In 2021, China was the main trading partner of Ukraine with a turnover of almost 19 billion US dollars, according to data from the Embassy of Ukraine in China.
