“Conceptually, it was decided that writers who wrote in Russian, but whose work was closely connected with Ukraine, that is, either they were born in Ukraine, or lived in Ukraine for a long time, or reflected Ukrainian themes in their works – their work will be remain in the training programs. This is, for example, Mykola Gogol. This is actually our Ukrainian writer who did a lot for Ukrainian culture. Or Volodymyr Korolenko. In the same way, Mikhail Bulgakov’s work “Heart of a Dog” will be studied. The program will include the study of Anatoly Kuznetsov’s work “Babyn Yar”, because it is a landmark work, a documentary, which is closely related to the tragic event that took place on the territory of Ukraine. A work like “12 Chairs” by Ilf and Petrov will also be studied in the school curriculum,” Kononenko explained.

He added that during the summer, a working group was working at the Ministry of Education to update some curricula for some school subjects. In particular, we are talking about the history of Ukraine, world history, foreign literature, geography, defense of Ukraine, and some other subjects.
After the conclusions of the working group, the updated “layout” of the program was also considered by the Scientific and Methodological Commission of the Ministry of Education and Culture. In addition, a meeting was held under the chairmanship of the minister, at which the key issues of this program were considered.
“Now a general project of the Ministry’s order on approval of all changes to all educational programs has been prepared. We expect that it will be signed in the near future, and thus from September 1 of the new school year, children will study according to the new programs,” added Kononenko.
At the same time, he noted that a large number of new works will not be included in the program of foreign literature.
“There will not be a very large number of new works that are included in the program. If previously some works were studied for additional reading, that is, if the children wanted to, they read them. Then some of them have been transferred to textual study. That is, there will be no mass inclusion of works, the skeleton the program remains as it is… For example, if we talk about something completely new, then Joseph Roth, an Austrian writer, he will also be studied in the school’s foreign literature course. A lot of writers who worked on the European, American and Asian continents will now be studied in the course of school foreign literature,” explained the representative of the ministry.
Regarding the availability of new works that will be included in the program and the preparation of teachers for teaching the new program, Kononenko said that recently many translations of foreign authors into Ukrainian have been published in Ukraine.
Also, according to him, work on teacher training will be carried out before and at the beginning of the academic year, which will be done by post-graduate education institutes in each region.
