China has announced that it will impose sanctions against the speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi and her closest relatives because of her visit to Taiwan .

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Pelosi “seriously interfered in China’s internal affairs, caused serious damage to China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, seriously trampled on the one-China principle, and seriously threatened peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait,” the statement said.
Context
China is holding the second day of one of its biggest military exercises around Taiwan. Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense says several Chinese ships and aircraft have been crossing the median line, the informal dividing line in the Taiwan Strait between mainland China and Taiwan, for a second day.
China’s military drills began after a controversial visit to the island by top US Democrat Nancy Pelosi.
Speaking in Japan, Pelosi promised that China “will not isolate” Taiwan by preventing American politicians from traveling there.
