The English version of the Chinese statement says Beijing “will work with the greatest sincerity and will make every effort to achieve peaceful reunification.”
“But we do not abandon the use of force and reserve the opportunity to take all necessary measures. This is done to protect against external interference and any separatist activity,” the statement said.
“We will always be ready to respond with the use of force or other necessary means to the intervention of external forces or the radical actions of separatist elements. Our ultimate goal is to secure the prospects for China’s peaceful reunification and advance this process,” the statement said.
The statement, released by the Cabinet Office for Taiwan and its news department, followed nearly a week of rocket firing and invasion of Taiwanese waters and airspace by Chinese warships and air force aircraft, the newspaper writes.
Such actions disrupted air traffic and shipping in the region, which is crucial for global supply chains, which has drawn sharp condemnation from the United States, Japan and other countries.

China says the threatening moves were sparked by a visit to Taiwan last week by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, but Taiwan says such visits are commonplace and that China has used it as an excuse to intensify its threats.
In response to Pelosi’s visit, China said it was ending dialogue on maritime security and climate change with the United States, Taiwan’s main military and political patron.
Taiwan’s foreign minister warned Tuesday that Chinese military exercises reflect a desire to control large areas of the western Pacific, while Taipei conducted his own exercises to emphasize his willingness to defend himself. On Tuesday, his military conducted live-fire exercises in Pingtung County on the southeast coast.
Beijing continued the ongoing exercises without announcing when they would end.
The U.S., Taipei’s chief deputy, has also demonstrated a willingness to confront China’s threats. Washington has no official diplomatic relations with Taiwan out of respect for Beijing, but it is legally obligated to ensure that the island can defend itself and treat all threats against it as issues of serious concern.
This leaves open the question of whether Washington will send troops if China attacks Taiwan. US President Joe Biden has repeatedly stated that the United States is obliged to do so, but his staff quickly denied these comments.
