The extradition of a man in his 30s will be the first known case of extradition to Turkey since the conclusion of an agreement on Ankara’s approval of the country’s accession to NATO.
“This is a common routine. The said person is a Turkish citizen and was convicted of fraud in Turkey in 2013 and 2016,” Swedish Justice Minister Morgan Johansson said in a text commentary to Reuters.
“The Supreme Court, as always, considered the issue and concluded that there were no obstacles to extradition,” he said.
A spokesman for the country’s justice ministry declined to say whether the person was on the list of persons whose extradition was requested by Turkey or to provide additional comments on the matter.
Swedish broadcaster SVT, which was the first to report the extradition, said the man had been sentenced in Turkey to 14 years in prison on several charges of bank card fraud.
A man detained in Sweden since last year claims he was convicted wrongfully because he converted to Christianity, refused to serve in the army and has Kurdish roots, according to SVT.

NATO ally Turkey lifted its veto over Finland’s and Sweden’s bid to join the Western alliance in June after weeks of tense talks in which Ankara accused the two Scandinavian countries of hiding, according to Turkey, militants of its banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
As part of the deal, Turkey provided a list of people it would like Sweden to extradite, but has since expressed frustration over the lack of progress.
