“We can confirm that over the past few weeks, Russian officials have conducted exercises in Iran as part of the UAV transfer agreement,” Patel said during a telephone briefing.
The United States will “decisively apply” sanctions for arms trade to both Russia and Iran, he said.
“We will continue to use all available tools, including sanctions, but not limited to, to prevent, deter and eliminate the procurement network that supplies UAV-related materials and technologies to Iran,” he added.
What happened before
On July 12, U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said Russia had asked Iran to provide it with “hundreds” of combat drones for use in the war against Ukraine.
Subsequently, the White House released information that Russian officials visited Iran at least twice to inspect the UAV.
The U.S. State Department said Washington would impose sanctions on Iran if the country supplied drones to Russia.
