Details
The poll shows that among the 570 Conservative MPs, the foreign minister won 61% and former finance minister Sunak won 39%.
The poll also revealed a striking lack of enthusiasm for either candidate when party members were asked whether they would prefer one of them to Boris Johnson to lead the party and the country.
“When offered the choice between Johnson, who remains in No 10, or the Tories, around 63% of Tories said they would prefer Johnson to remain in power, compared to 22% , who wanted Truss. Even more starkly, 68% said they would rather keep Johnson than see him replaced by Sunak, who was preferred by just 19%,” the report said.
The survey showed that almost three in ten of the Conservative electorate (29%) had already voted. About 47% said that they would definitely vote for the candidate they elected. Only 19% said they had not yet made a decision.
Addition
Sunak and Truss are vying for the votes of around 200,000 Conservative members who will choose the next prime minister, with the winner to be announced on September 5.
Earlier, Liz Truss, who is applying to replace the prime minister, said that she would become Ukraine’s “greatest friend” if she won the position, and said that she would immediately call the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi.
Zelenskyi is worried that the new Prime Minister of Britain may support Ukraine less than Johnson.
