Australia announced the creation of the first offshore wind zone instead of operating coal-fired power plants.

The country’s government has declared the waters of the Gipsland coast as Australia’s first offshore wind zone, giving developers the green light for wind farm projects.
Wind projects are designed to fill the void that formed after the closure of coal-fired power plants in the Latrobe Valley.

“We have some of the best wind resources in the world. Just one spin of one offshore wind turbine gives as much energy as the average rooftop solar installation generates per day,” said Federal Energy Secretary Chris Bowen.
The start of the project is scheduled for 2025, and it provides for the construction of up to 200 windmills, the closest of which will be located 7 km from the coastline.
