“I am in captivity, imprisoned in Georgia, but my heart is in Ukraine. My health is undermined, but I want my fellow citizens to know Ukrainians that I am supported spiritually and physically by the heroism of our soldiers, the unity of the people, the leadership of President Zelenskyy, the support of the whole world of Ukraine and my own boundless faith in victory. I want freedom for Ukraine and I want to directly participate in the struggle and I am sure that Ukrainians do not abandon their own and will remember me,” the message says.
Recall
Saakashvili, against whom Georgia has several criminal cases, was detained on October 1 in Tbilisi. It was reported that he illegally crossed the country’s border.
Immediately after his arrest in Georgia, Saakashvili was placed in prison No. 12 in Rustavi. It is in this penitentiary institution, as a rule, that former civil servants and employees of law enforcement agencies are kept.
On November 8, due to the deteriorating health of the starving, Saakashvili was transferred to a prison hospital in the Gldansky district of Tbilisi. Lawyers and a doctor complained about the ex-president’s unbearable conditions of detention, the constant noise made by the prisoners, and the lack of appropriate equipment and a team of doctors in the prison hospital.
Despite the fact that usually prisoners are sent to be treated in civilian hospitals, the penitentiary service refused to extend this rule to Saakashvili, explaining that keeping the president in an unprotected institution can cause riots.
As a compromise, on the 50th day of the hunger strike, on November 20, Saakashvili was transferred to a military hospital in Gori, where he first stayed in the intensive care unit and then underwent a rehabilitation course. There Saakashvili stopped his hunger strike.
Already on December 30, after a rehabilitation course, he arrived from the military hospital in Gori back to the prison of the city of Rustavi.
