Australia’s National Metropolitan Authority (NCA), which deals with planning and land management, notified Russia of the decision to terminate the lease of the land where the new Russian embassy was to be built.
Details
russia intended to build a new embassy in Canberra instead of the existing embassy in the suburbs of Griffith. The NCA reportedly granted the lease permit in December 2008 and work and construction permits on March 31, 2011 and September 23, 2011, respectively.
Under the lease agreement, Russia has pledged to complete construction within three years, but the project has not yet been completed. After regular consultations and discussions with Russian representatives, as well as in the absence of commitments regarding the completion date, the NCA decided to terminate the contract, the management said in a statement.
“This block is a premium venue in the centre of Canberra, close to Burley Griffin Lake and the Australian Parliament Building. Unfinished work is underway, detracting from the overall aesthetics, importance and dignity of the territory reserved for diplomatic missions and foreign missions in the national capital,” said Sally Barnes, head of the National Metropolitan Administration.
The NCA notes that the decision to terminate the lease of the site for the construction of a new embassy does not affect the existing Russian embassy. In addition, Russia may submit a new application in the future, which will be reviewed and evaluated accordingly by the management.
