German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is convinced that conversations with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin are “important, including in the future.” He stated this in an interview with the Swedish publication Dagens Nyheter .

Asked about continuing dialogue with Putin, Scholz said direct communication was “important, especially during a crisis.” He added that he wanted the Russian dictator to be directly informed that Russia should take responsibility for the war in Ukraine.

“My clear message to him is that his strategy towards Ukraine will not work. Of course, this does not mean that Russia changes course from time to time. But Putin needs to know what we demand of him. That’s why I think such conversations are important, including in the future,” Scholz said.
The Chancellor also expressed doubts about the normalization of relations with Russia in the near future.
“Russia is waging war against Ukraine, causing it immense suffering and destruction. Until Russia stops this war, withdraws its troops from Ukraine and makes peace on reasonable terms, I do not see an opportunity to even think about normalization,” he concluded.
