Senators of the Argentine National Congress voted in favor of a law legalizing abortion for up to 14 weeks of pregnancy. The decision was supported by 38 members of the upper house, 29 opposed and one abstained.
It is noted that the law is innovative for Latin America – a region with some of the world’s strictest abortion laws.
The bill was previously approved by the lower house of Congress and supported by President Alberto Fernandez.
On election day, crowds of activists for and against abortion gathered outside the Congress building to try to influence the senators.
Until now, abortions have been allowed in Argentina only in cases of rape or when the mother’s health was endangered. Activists have been advocating for a change in the law for years, journalists report.
In October this year in Poland, limited the right of women to abortion, declaring them “unconstitutional.”
After that, more than 100,000 people rallied in Warsaw against the abortion ban. Almost 70% of the citizens of the republic want a referendum on this issue.
