The Association of Ukrainian Banks, which has been working in Ukraine for more than a decade, was created by the godfather of the former President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko, Stanislav Arzhevitin.
Quote
When Yushchenko was the head of the NBU (1993-1999 – ed.), Stanislav Arzhevitin was like that. He is the godfather of Yushchenko and it was he who created the Association of Ukrainian Banks. Moreover, Yushchenko, as the head of the NBU, verbally recommended all bank managers to join this Association and everyone agreed, because no one wanted to conflict with the head of the NBU.
Then they (Arzhevitin et al. – ed.) decided that the banks should pay rather large contributions, which was actually a bribe. That is, if you want to work in the banking sector, join AUB and pay them regularly.
And indeed, while Yushchenko was in power, he could influence the management of the banks with his actions, and they understood that they had no way out, because various inspections could begin. And as a result of such actions of Yushchenko and his, one might say, family ties with Arzhevitin, the Association got rich: a lot of money, support.
Sugonyako was then the executive director. And there was such a situation, for example – a small bank went to the Association to Sugonyak and asked – can you order a word there for my bank. And he could convey the request, resolve the situation, not for free… And it worked,” Okhrimenko explained.
He noted – AUB really still exists, some even still pay contributions, but membership in it does not solve anything.
“On the example of Megabank: PR, PR, it paid membership fees, and in the end, despite PR from AUB, Megabank went bankrupt,” Okhrimenko summarized.
Let’s add
Viktor Yushchenko and his godfather Stanislav Arzhevitin are still members of the higher board of AUB. The president of AUB is Andrii Dubas, whose father is Bohdan Dubas, a long-time associate of the ex-chairman of the National Bank, Stepan Kubiv, whom the mass media blame for the sharp increase in the dollar rate and the bankruptcy of a number of banks.
