Currently, in Kyiv, there is a slight excess in terms of air dustiness and the content of formaldehyde and nitrogen dioxide. The main reasons are heat and a large number of motor vehicles.

“In terms of dustiness, there is no excess in the city as a whole. A slight excess of the maximum permissible concentrations is observed only on Bessarabska Square and Victory Square, as well as in the Pechersky Most area. There, the indicator was 1.1 MPC, i.e. it is exceeded by 0.1. In general, the dust level in the city is 0.3-0.5 MPC,” the observatory said.

Exceeding the permissible concentrations of nitrogen dioxide and formaldehyde in the air was recorded. But according to the expert, such an excess is always observed in the summer. This is facilitated by the combination of heat and a large number of motor vehicles.
“If you look at the indicators of nitrogen dioxide, its amount is decreasing. If on August 25 there was an excess of 2.5 MPC, then on August 29 – 1.5 MPC. It was the highest on Peremoha Square and Demiivska Square and on Obolonsky Avenue. It rained over the weekend and cleared the atmosphere a bit. The content of formaldehyde in the air also decreased. On August 26, it exceeded 3.0 MPC, and on August 29 – 1.8. The greatest excess is observed on Bessarabska Square, where there is a lot of traffic, as well as on Demiivska and in the area of Lesya Ukrainka Boulevard,” the observatory noted.
As for whether the burning of peat in the Kyiv region could have affected air pollution in the capital, the expert says that if it did happen, it was insignificant. And the air quality was most affected in the northern districts of Kyiv, especially in Obolon.
“Mainly, according to our long-term observations, vehicles are affected. There are, of course, emergency situations, such as burning peat bogs. But now we observe that the excess is insignificant. The highest level is in the north, in the Obolon district, and for formaldehyde, 2.6 MPC, and for nitrogen dioxide, 2.5. But it should be understood that in the summer, due to the heat, a large number of motor vehicles and the absence of wind, these indicators can reach 10. Therefore, there is an excess now, but it is insignificant,” the observatory said.
