Permanent representatives of the EU member states can agree on the suspension of the agreement on the simplified visa regime with the Russian Federation on Wednesday, September 7. This is stated in the preliminary draft of the agenda of the committee of post-presidencies of the EU countries (COREPER) for September 7 .
Details
One of the possible items on the agenda of the COREPER meeting for adoption is “the decision of the Council (EU – ed.) to suspend the application of the Agreement on the simplification of the visa regime with the Russian Federation.”
Addition
On August 31, the ministers of foreign affairs of the EU countries agreed to suspend the visa facilitation agreement with Russia from 2007 against the background of Russia’s war against Ukraine.
The termination of the visa facilitation agreement with Russia will mean that Russians will pay 80 euros instead of 35 for EU visas, and will also face a longer procedure for obtaining them.
Earlier, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy , called on the West to introduce a complete travel ban on Russians, which provoked an angry rebuff from Moscow.
