The ecologist noted that in Kyiv last year 14,000 Christmas trees were disposed of and, according to rough data, more than 500,000 Christmas trees were sold.
Disposal of Christmas trees after the New Year is a huge problem for the ecology of Ukraine. According to statistics, most Christmas trees end up in landfills, where they are then burned and thus harm the environment.
The head of the All-Ukrainian Ecological League Tetyana Tymochko told about it. She noted that in Kyiv last year, 14,000 Christmas trees were disposed of and, according to rough data, more than 500,000 Christmas trees were sold.
“Not all purchased Christmas trees are disposed of, to a large extent a significant part of Christmas trees ends up in landfills. In Kyiv last year, 14,000 Christmas trees were disposed of and, according to rough data, more than 500,000 Christmas trees were sold. Christmas trees in landfills simply pollute the environment, then they are burned without authorization, this is a terrible problem for Ukraine, “said the ecologist.
Tymochko noted that in Kyiv they are trying to dispose of Christmas trees.
“Those Christmas trees that get to the points are shredded and used, this is a very important procedure. Cod from Christmas trees is stored for a very long time, they cover the holes in trees in the city that suffer from vehicle emissions. This greatly protects the plants, protects them from drying out, and retains moisture” she explained.
However, according to Tymochko, such a system does not exist throughout Ukraine.
“There is a very big gap between the felling of millions of living trees and the minimum number of disposed ones, between felled and brought to the cities and bought. In Kyiv last year we registered more than 45,000 unpurchased trees. This is of great concern to environmentalists, we need to change the attitude to the use of living trees, “said the ecologist.
