Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has caused turmoil in the labor market. Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians were left without work for various reasons – hostilities, relocation or closure of enterprises. In addition, because of the war, the legislation changed and now it has become easier to fire an employee. However, some employers resort to violations of even simplified rules and illegally fire their employees, or do not pay them proper wages.
“Bread” and “Rare Bird”
The “Hlibniy” chain of coffee shops has repeatedly been involved in scandals due to unfair treatment of its employees. Thus, at the beginning of the full-scale war, employees of coffee shops faced delays and non-payment of wages for February.
However, the situation in the restaurant “Rare Bird” from the same owners was even worse. As one of the employees of the establishment said , the restaurant was simply closed without notifying the staff. At the same time, they were not paid wages for the time worked, under the guise that the institution helps the Armed Forces.
“Milk from the farmer”
Employees of “Farmer’s Milk” stores faced huge fines due to expired products. In fact, the store owners decided to shift the responsibility for the damaged product to the employees and began to charge them for the cost of such products. They talk about it on review sites. Workers say that sometimes they had to sell expired products so that these funds would not be deducted from them, because due to huge fines, it was possible to remain without a salary at all.
“Egersund”
Employees of the “Egerzund” chain of stores decided to sue the company altogether. All because of illegal dismissals already after the start of a full-scale invasion.
As one of the employees said, when the full-scale invasion began, the employees of the stores were sent on unpaid leave, and later they learned about their dismissal. According to the documents, the employees were dismissed by agreement of the parties, but the employees themselves did not sign the application for dismissal. Employees also did not receive severance pay.
