China’s ruling Communist Party will amend its constitution next month. According to some analysts, the move could strengthen the authority and position of party leader Xi Jinping.

State news agency Xinhua reported on Friday that the Politburo discussed the draft amendment to the party’s constitution at a meeting chaired by Xi, without specifying what the changes were.
Xi is expected to break precedent at the congress, which begins on October 16 , and serve a third five-year term, cementing his status as China’s most powerful leader since Mao Zedong, the founder of the People’s Republic.
The party’s constitution was last amended in 2017 to enshrine “Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics,” a move that bolstered Xi’s reputation.

According to political observers polled by Reuters, one of the corrections is a correction that reduces the party’s ideology to the “idea of Xi Jinping.”
Another possible change, which would also be seen as strengthening the power of the leader, would be to establish Xi as the “core” of the party and his ideas as the guiding principles.
It is less likely, as some experts have suggested, that the statute could restore the top post of party chairman, which was abolished in 1982.
The party charter can be changed only at the congress, which is held once every five years.
