The U.S. Commerce Department said Monday it will add three Iranian cargo planes serving Russia to a list of planes in violation of U.S. export controls under the Biden administration’s sanctions.

Using commercially available data, the Commerce Department found that Boeing 747s operated by Mahan Air, Qeshm Fars Air and Iran Air were carrying goods, including electronics, to Russia in apparent violation of strict export controls linked to its invasion of Ukraine. According to the department, these are the first three identified Iranian planes.
The department warned that any refueling, maintenance, repair, replacement parts or services would violate US export controls and expose the companies to US enforcement action.
Iran has officially announced its intention to expand cooperation with Russia in the aviation sector by supplying spare parts for aircraft, the Ministry of Commerce reported.
According to the department, taking into account the additions, 183 aircraft were added to the list for clear violations of US export controls. The three Iranian airlines identified on Monday have already faced a series of restrictions from the US government.
Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Export Controls Matthew Axelrod said that “US controls, particularly on goods such as electronics and aircraft parts, have undermined Russia’s defense industrial base and severely limited access to the global economy.”
“When Russia tries to use rogue countries like Iran to fill in what the international community has cut off, we will take steps to stop such attempts and destroy such ties,” he added.
