Syrian authorities said on Thursday that 15 bodies had been found off the coast of Tartus after a boat carrying illegal migrants from Lebanon sank.

Director General of Ports Samer Kobarli said 15 bodies and 8 injured people were found off the coast of Tartus. On-site searches will continue.

“Fishermen also took part in the rescue operations,” reports the Lebanese News Agency.
Attempts by Lebanese and Syrians to illegally migrate from Lebanon to European countries are increasing due to worsening economic and social conditions and rising poverty.
Lebanon has been struggling with a severe economic crisis since late 2019, including a significant currency devaluation and fuel and health care shortages.
