Users are reluctant to switch to newer versions of products, preferring familiar systems and resources. Yes, the outdated Internet Explorer browser still occupies a large market share, despite the fact that Microsoft is trying in various ways to transfer everyone to the newer Edge. It turned out that the situation is similar with Windows XP.
Analytical companies NetMarketShare and StatCounter shared data on the number of installed versions of Windows on computers in 2020. Windows 7 is still in the lead.
Windows usage statistics
On January 14, 2020, Microsoft stopped releasing critical security updates and providing technical support to Windows 7 users. The company offered all users of this version of the operating system to upgrade to Windows 10 for free (if licensed). However, millions of people declined the offer!
Currently, according to StatCounter statistics, Windows 7 is installed on 17.6 percent of Windows computers in the world. In 2019, the share was 25.56 percent. That is, after the final cessation of support, the share decreased by only 8 percent.
But NetMarketShare provides slightly different numbers. According to them, the share of Windows 7 is now 21 percent, which is 10 percent less than their data for 2019.
The dominance of Windows 7 in the market may be due to the fact that many organizations that have purchased a license for the system are in no hurry to upgrade to Windows 10 to avoid the additional costs associated with updating the PC and the need for additional maintenance. In addition, almost all existing software continues to be produced, including for Windows 7.
Paradoxically, Windows XP continues to be in the top five versions of both reports. But its share has fallen sharply and is less than 1 percent.
