“We call on President Putin to end the war. He is responsible for unleashing the war and he must stop this war. If Russia stops fighting, there will be peace, if Zelensky and Ukraine stop fighting, Ukraine will cease to exist as an independent country. We are not talking about two equal sides: we have Russia as an aggressor, and we have a victim of aggression – Ukraine. And that’s the reason why we support Ukraine so clearly. The illegal annexation of the territory does not change the essence of the conflict,” Stoltenberg said.
The Secretary General of the Alliance stressed that NATO supports the right of a sovereign country to protection. He added that the Alliance will continue to provide assistance to Ukraine as long as necessary. Another reason is that Puin’s actions pose a danger to NATO member states as well.
“If we allow Putin in Ukraine, it will be catastrophic for Ukraine. It will cease to exist as a sovereign country. But it is also dangerous for us. Inaction is also a big risk. Because it creates a world in which Putin will see that he can use military force against his neighbor with impunity and equip his sphere of influence. If you listen to what he says not only about Ukraine, but also about NATO members – about eastern partners, it turns out that this is a world that is dangerous for all of us,” Stoltenberg stressed.
